I recently graduated from California State University Northridge with a BA in Graphic Design. The program expanded my design influences and horizons and helped prepare me to meet the conceptual and practical challenges of the field.
The decision to pursue an Art degree came only after an investment had been made into another course of study. After high school, I knew I wanted to focus on a career that allowed for creativity and a healthy sense of practical business application. It was advertising that really captivated me, and the closest match academically was marketing. I excelled in this program, and found many of the topics interesting, while others were less satisfying. As the semesters passed, however, a want of more-creativity-less-numbers persisted. My final semester of business school I made the decision to finish that program and return the following fall to study Art.
Although I found the graphic design program more stimulating, I'm glad I also have a background of business and marketing education. Every day I realize and appreciate that marketing and design tie-in to each other and how a strong understanding of both disciplines produces efficient and effective design solutions.
