Overview
SFJAZZ launched a new program aimed at a younger audience with local artists covering jazz legends. Constrained only by event details and highlighting both cover and original musicians, I designed a series of flyers that drew inspiration from the jazz genre, graphic design history, and local culture.
Background
SFJAZZ launched a new series of shows at small venues featuring local bands covering the songs of jazz legends.
Goal
Increase awareness of and attendance to SFJAZZ Hotplate shows to continue building the audience of SFJAZZ shows in general.
Challenges
This was a new series of shows vying for the attention, and dollars, of an already crowded entertainment scene in San Francisco’s Mission district.
Solution
I turned to jazz/music posters of the past for inspiration in designing something new and unique for this series of shows. Each show was a different story, but maintained some consistent elements to recognize these shows were all part of the Hotplate family.
Impact
The shows at Amnesia bar in the Mission were well attended and helped promote the larger SFJAZZ brand and expand jazz music to new audiences. The Hotplate series of shows continues since 2009 to this day.
Learnings
Whereas SFJAZZ had a well-established and consistent brand and visual communications, this was an opportunity to branch out and experiment with wildly different looks. The risks in both design and overall venture paid off with this successful series of shows.
